SKIMMING - Gallery DEMO
Definition Illegal copying of a bank card’s security and identification data via a card reading device, coupled with PIN misappropriation via shoulder surfing, miniature camera, electronic recording or long-range surveillance methods. The cardholder’s information is then transferred onto another card, often a piece of ‘virgin white plastic’ or other readily available plastic i.e. mobile phone top-up cards or supermarket loyalty cards. The counterfeit card is then used, in conjunction with the corresponding PIN, to withdraw funds at ATMs, usually where there is no CCTV.
Major Types Hand-held skimmers; ATM overlays; false card readers; modified POS devices
GASA Security Tips and Best Practices Hourly checking of ATM interface; install skimming device detectors; cardholder security education on PIN protection; surveillance; defensible space and/or ATM mirror to prevent shoulder surfing; CCTV to capture images of fraudsters, especially out of office hours when these crimes mostly take place.
Countermeasures TMD developes the "CPK+", the ountermeasure against skimming and Card trapping. A year after the succesful introductions of the anti-skimming device, the CPK, and in Q3 2005 the detection device, the SDK, TMD will shortly introduce the latest development, the CPK+. Based on the already proven technique of both mentioned devices the CPK+ offers a complete solution against card-skimming and card- trapping (Lebanese loop)

This new device, with taylor made alarm and signal functions, has various variations that can be installed on customers request. Of course it also has the well known features like easy installation, it fits in all ATM and SST brands and again no software changes on the ATM and SST is needed. The CPK+ is also ready to protect ATM's and SST's with a Dip card reader, as far as we are aware the first solution for Dip card readers in te world. At this moment the CPK+ is tested in various labaratory- and also "live" environments and will be lounched during the ATMIA conference in London, UK on 17th and 18th October 2005.
