Diversionary Fraud
 
Definition

This is when fraudsters divert ATM traffic away from centrally located ATMs to ones which are more isolated where it will be easier for the criminals to commit robbery or other types of crime without being detected. Diversionary fraud also includes the use of distraction tactics to trick cardholders at ATMs in order to steal cards, copy PINs or pickpocket them. In extreme cases, criminal can vandalise ATMs as part of an effort to divert ATM traffic.

GASA Security Tips and Best Practices Best practices include customer education to inform cardholders not to follow diversionary notices and not to allow themselves to be distracted or "assisted" by strangers, regular checking of ATMs, monitoring of usage levels at ATMs to identify unusually any sudden or a-typical inactivity.
